PANCE® Exam Blueprint

The Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) is developed from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) content blueprint. The PANCE exam blueprint was last updated in January 2019, and the content examines:

  1. 1) Knowledge of the diseases and disorders physician assistants encounter
  2. 2) Knowledge and skills related to tasks physician assistants perform when treating patients

Exam content on the PANCE is divided into “medical content categories” and “task categories.” Each of these categories on the PANCE is designed to assess knowledge in order to determine if entry-level competency for a PA-C has been demonstrated.

The NCCPA relies on certified physician assistants to write PANCE questions, review the exam, analyze data, make recommendations, and maintain relevance. The categories included in the PANCE exam blueprint and their percentage allocation are:

The PANCE exam blueprint provided by the NCCPA lists “examples provided for each medical content and task category,” stating that these examples are “indicative of the types of information that will be included on the exam.”
